For 16 years, Lyndal Linton has been entering the World of WearableArt Competition, but last year was different. For the first time, her husband Brett and son Harvey officially joined her team.
Brett Linton’s background in the boating industry, working with carbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb, inspired him to contribute his expertise to Lyndal’s designs. Meanwhile, Harvey Linton reached the age to officially debut as a WOW Designer after years of being his mother’s trusted sidekick as well as her mannequin for the historic Children’s Section. Harvey drove the initial concept design for their 2022 Aotearoa Section entry, X-Ray.
The Linton team’s passion for creative innovation made their design stand out from the competition and X-Ray was awarded Second Prize in the 2022 Aotearoa Section. Their family bond and artistic vision will undoubtedly continue to shine in future WOW Competitions.
The Linton family’s award-winning entry, X-Ray, was inspired by the discovery of a stingray skeleton and its natural beauty. X-Ray is a design that combines traditional and contemporary elements. The garment is created with carbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb patterning, combined with harakeke (flax) and uses tukutuku-like detail. We also see the tradition of oil painting used to create the skeleton imagery showing through the outer skin.
Q. What was it like to find out that your work of art was going to be a Finalist?
A. It’s always a marked day on the calendar for our family, as we’ve experienced both sides of it for 18 years – in some years and out in others. This year was particularly thrilling for me, receiving the “congratulations” email after collaborating with Brett and Harvey on a very special family project.
Q. What was it like seeing your garment on stage for the first time?
A. I always attend the preview show, and a few years ago, my garment had a minor mishap on this night, so I was quite nervous. However, when X-Ray came out first, I was completely blown away and even cried tears of relief, pride, and excitement for Brett and Harvey who didn’t see it until Awards Night. The whole family was there on Awards Night, and I couldn’t wait to see their reactions. Everyone’s jaws dropped, and they couldn’t quite believe how great it looked under the lights and how well the model moved it. It was an incredible celebration.
Q. What is your secret weapon when creating a garment?
A. I would have to say my team – years of family support from modelling and critiquing to design and production, and our sail loft workshop. Over the years, I have used many materials, hardware, and tools that are typically used for sail making.
Q. Do you have any other thoughts about WOW or your experience you would like to share?
A. WOW and our families have been such significant parts of my life. It’s so gratifying to work with homegrown members! I hope there will be many more successful collaborations to come. Another thing that makes WOW such a fantastic experience for me is our Pow Wow group. Meeting regularly helps me stay on track, and everyone is so talented and inspiring, making it a lot of fun to be a part of.
